About Gengama

The pottery-making at Gengama begins by sowing small "seeds of attachment" in daily life. Each time you pick it up, each time you use it, the distance between the vessel and your heart gradually closes.
Through long use, vessels absorb the touch of hands, blend into life, and eventually become something that reflects time and memories. We believe this quiet transformation is the true richness of craftsmanship.
Sowing Seeds of Attachment
Hiroyuki Saito inherited Gengama from Gen Komori in Toshima, Kumamoto City
Relocated to current location in Ueki-machi, established unique style
Unique Technique
Arasabi-Kesho (Rough Rust Decoration)
A unique technique that layers rough slip on the clay body, drawing out natural textures and deep shadows through firing. The expression resembles aged metal or stone, evoking traces of weathering and time.

In addition to creating and selling works, Gengama hosts pottery experience classes and regular pottery lessons. We also actively collaborate with various fields and participate in events.
At Gallery Akatsubaki next to the studio, we exhibit and sell works primarily by Gengama artists, with occasional events.
